We are Ayesha & Amaya Mangaldas, two sisters + co-founders, born & raised in Mumbai, India.
As children, we grew up playing gharghar or House House. Our slow afternoons were filled with imagination and discovery. As adults, we believe that our “real” homes should also be created in the same spirit, by choosing objects of beauty and keeping a sense of play alive.
In today’s world we all need a respite from rushing around. Beauty slows us down and inspires us.
For us, this quest for beauty begins at home. Home is where we begin and end each day. It is the sanctuary where we return to ourselves. The objects we choose to live with matter.
Our country has one of the deepest and most diverse reservoirs of beauty, with millions of people dedicated to the transmission of ancient craft techniques.
Objects created using these methods have an inherent beauty which is derived from knowledge and skill mastered over generations.
We believe these objects have the power to bring great joy to homes around the world, and are a reminder of India’s extraordinary heritage.
When designing products at House House, we lead with this question. We travel across India to workshops and artisan communities where centuries-old techniques continue to be practised by hand.
We spend time learning, documenting, and understanding not only how things are made, but why they are made the way they are.
Our collections are born from these conversations, in collaboration with makers and designers.
Beauty. We believe the most beautiful objects are made by skilled hands using materials from nature. Their beauty lies not only in how they look, but in how they are made, how they are used, and how they age.
Play. A favourite word we hear from the people we work with is khelna - to play. It reminds us that tradition is not static. Whether experimenting with colour, pattern, subject, or form, it is play that invites curiosity and surprise to the creative process.
