Our checked mats are lustrous, light and silky underfoot, with a weave and pattern so precise that at first glance, people assume it's painted on.

Handwoven and hand-dyed in Medinipur, West Bengal, by a family of master weavers, each mat takes one week and two pairs of hands to complete, using 100% natural, locally grown madur reeds.

What’s special?

Every reed is dyed and woven individually, by two pairs of hands moving in perfect rhythm, passing each reed over and under the warp at exactly the right point to create the checked pattern. This complicated process takes a week to complete.
Materials & making
  • 100% handmade from start to finish.
  • Woven from locally harvested reeds (madur).
  • Dyed using AZO-free eco-friendly dyes.
  • Fungus-treated.
  • Subtle variations in colour are a natural characteristic of the reeds and the dyeing process. No two mats are exactly alike.
Care & storage
  • The mat is water resistant.
  • To clean, use a damp sponge or a soft brush and wipe gently. Avoid harsh detergents or chemical cleaners.
  • Store the mat rolled, not folded, to prevent damage.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to rain or direct sunlight.
  • In dry climates, wipe down the mat with a damp cloth periodically, to prevent the reed from becoming brittle.

Notes from the field

The reeds are locally harvested and split into finer strands in the Medinipur region of West Bengal.

The process of dyeing the reeds to our vibrant colours takes several days, with each step carefully carried out by hand.

On the loom, two skilled weavers with years of training work opposite each other, passing each reed over and under the warp to form the pattern.
