Atri Tapestry: Large Single Piece
Our Atri Tapestries bring tradition and experimentation together on the Maheshwari loom. Familiar borders, created using a dobby setting, meet a playful use of atri - the unwoven spaces traditionally left between saris. By making the atris part of the artwork, we explored new ways to bring fluidity and movement to the textile.
Handwoven by Imran Bhai on a traditional Maheshwari two-pedal handloom. Created through a wonderfully playful collaboration with Amba, Rasika Dhakite and Wasim Ansari’s workshop.

Notes from the field
The warp threads run lengthwise, held under tension on the loom. The weaver passes the weft across them using a shuttle, building the cloth one row at a time.
Beneath the loom, two pedals control the shafts that raise and lower the warp threads. With each change, a passage opens for the shuttle to carry the weft through.
A dobby mechanism controls selected warp threads to create patterned borders. We explored how these familiar elements of Maheshwari saris could become part of our textile artworks.
