Indigo Study: Set of 4 (C)
Our Dabu-printed Indigo works are hand-printed by the artisans at Aavaran, in Udaipur, using a multi-step multi-day mud resist printing technique.
First, the patterns are created with wooden blocks and a mud paste. The fabric is then dipped into an indigo vat.
The process is then repeated multiple times, using the triple dabu process. Each dip into the vat colouring the fabric a deeper shade of Indigo. Finally, the fabric is washed to reveal the pattern.
Designed in collaboration with Prerna Gupta to show off three dips in indigo. Each piece in the set is 12x12", available exclusively at House House.

Notes from the field
The triple dabu process begins with a mud-resist paste - a mix of clay, wheat chaff, lime, and gum - hand-applied to the cotton with carved wooden blocks. The "resisted" parts of the fabric become sealed off from the dye.
Then comes the first dip into a bubbling natural indigo vat. The fabric is printed and dipped again and again, building up colour in layers - each round deepens the blue further - wherever the resist has been removed.
Finally, once the last dip has set and dried, the fabric is washed to strip away the dried mud paste entirely - and the pattern appears. After, the lightest shade of blue is embroidered by the artisans at Aavaran.
